On Wednesday May 8th, the Pacific Council on International Policy honored Hillary Rodham Clinton with the Warren Christopher Public Service award at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. Warren Christopher was the 63rd Secretary of State, best known for helping normalize relations with Vietnam.

The gala event was held inside the legendary opulence of the grand ballroom and offered the perfect location to honor Secretary Clinton. As Secretary of State, she was widely viewed as a strong positive role model for women the world over. A multitude of ambassadors and dignitaries attended the event including representatives from Indonesia and Mexico. Cyril Ndaba, the South African consulate and recent member of USC’s Annenberg Public Diplomacy Scholars panel, also paid tribute to Clinton.

Hillary Clinton was presented by a long time friend of the Clinton family Marc Nathanson, with opening remarks by the Pacific Council CEO, Jerrold D. Green. Green is also a research professor of business and communication at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Other luminaries for the evening included the USC Annenberg School’s Dean Wilson, former Annenberg Dean and Voice of America director and current Director of USC’s Center on Communication Leadership and Policy Geoffrey Cowan, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy.

Hillary peppered her acceptance speech with words of wisdom from Secretary Christopher, “Never count on taking a planned vacation, especially in August, because there’s always a crisis in August.” She provided anecdotes about some of the other inspirations in her life including her photo of William Seward. She pointed out how Seward “ran against Lincoln and lost. To his surprise, he turned out to be his Secretary of State.” Clinton also stated how President Obama viewed the trajectory of their relationship from rivals to becoming an “unbeatable team.”

Other topics included U.S.-China relations where Clinton discussed how China’s growth and power on the economic stage should also translate to growth and power to their people. She also remarked that although China and the U.S. are partners, they are reaching a crossroads due to the Chinese state-sponsored hacking of U.S. intelligence and businesses. Clinton cities this only undermines future endeavors causing strain between the two powers. Clinton also reflected on the state of Burma and the future of North Korea.

Clinton finished her speech reminding all to not rest on their laurels and the duty of Americans who want to see change in the world: “American leadership is not a birthright; it must be earned by every generation.”

From the New York Times:

An Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the new pope. He will be called Francis and is the first non-European leader of the church in more than 1,000 years. Over the last century, much of the growth of the Roman Catholic Church has been outside Europe, and there are now more than 200 million more Catholics in Latin America than in Europe.

What are the Public Diplomacy implications of the first “American” pontiff in the Church’s history, both for the Holy See, Argentina, and Latin America as a whole? Does this signal a shift in the Church or in the role that Latin America will play in the international sphere? Should the new pope be a “representative” for Latin American needs and issues?

Also, make sure to check out the New York Times article, as it has a great visual about the southward shift of the Catholic Church.

Since today is International Women’s Day, we thought it was apropos to look at the Fall 2012 issue of the USC Center on Public Diplomacy’s PDiN Monitor, which focused on the role of women in Public Diplomacy.

As Director of CPD, Dr. Philip Seib, notes:

Public diplomacy has increasingly addressed issues of particular interest to women, ranging from personal safety to economic empowerment. Throughout much of the world, harsh gender-based disparities damage the lives of individuals and nations, underscoring the importance of public diplomacy programs that respond to women’s needs.

The entire Fall 2012 issue of PDiN Monitor is available at http://uscpublicdiplomacy.org/index.php/pdin_monitor/issue/fall_2012/.
